Early on the planning stage it was obvious that our Discovery Sport wasn’t going to be enough to pull a 3 tonne caravan, so we were on the hunt for suitable car to get us round Australia. Since we already knew which caravan we were going with it wasn’t hard to search for something that could pull it.
After months of research we started to narrow the list of options and had a better idea of what we wanted and a Dual Cab ute seemed to tick a lot of the boxes. We looked at all brands but eventually narrowed it down to a Toyota Hilux, Mazda BT-50, Volkswagon Amarok and Ford Ranger Wildtrak, open to either new or 2nd hand, it really came down to value and price.
After weighing up the options we decided to go with the Ford Ranger Wildtrak, with it having 3.5 tonne towing capacity, 4 wheel drive, rear diff lock, a load of other features which we wanted, but most of all a 6000kg GCM, it was the perfect option for us. We added a snorkel, electric brake controller and got the wiring done as well. We plan to add other accessories to the Wildtrak if we find we need them as we make our way around.
